Portsmouth is the only city on an island within the United Kingdom and it is situated on Portsea Island. Portsmouth has a population of about one hundred and ninety seven thousand seven hundred. The wider area of Portsmouth and the surrounding suburban areas have a collective population of about four hundred and forty two thousand and two hundred and fifty two, which makes this the eleventh largest area within England with regards to the density of the population.
The city of Portsmouth plays a large part within the navy. Portsmouth is home to one of the world's oldest dry docks and it is still used and houses a lot of famous ships, which includes Nelsons flagship that was called HMS Victory. Over the years the navy have declined the use of the port in Portsmouth however is does still play a very big part. Portsmouth has a commercial port that serves as a destination for passenger traffic as well as freight.
A recent addition to the skyline of Portsmouth is what is known as Spinnaker Tower. This tower is located within the local area that has recently seen massive redevelopment and is known as Gunwharf Quays.
The main areas of employment within the city of Portsmouth are the services sector, which includes things such as financial services and industrial areas of energy and construction. About a tenth of the cities workforce is employed within the naval dockyard.
